Early humans built primarily for shelter, using simple methods. Improvements in building construction happened concurrently with human progress. We began to add separate rooms for different activities – bedrooms for sleeping, living rooms for family gathering and kitchens for cooking. However, it is interesting to note that two activities remained out of the confines of the homes for considerably long period. And those activities were getting rid of wastes from body (urination and defecation) and cleaning oneself (bathing, washing etc). People either performed these activities in open or at public facilities (depending on one’s status in the society). That was because of absence of plumbing and sewage systems.
The use of bathroom as a separate room in homes is a recent development. Improvement in plumbing system was very slow, with virtually no progress made from the time of the Roman aqueducts and lead pipes until the 19th century. The sewage system was worst if ever there was one. As the populations of cities grew, disastrous epidemics of cholera and typhoid broke out, the result of ineffective separation of sewage and drinking water. Only in the mid-19th century, the first steps were taken to treat wastewater.
Thanks to modern systems of efficient plumbing and sewage, those who can afford can have a bathroom as large as a bedroom. Depending on space, taste and budget, people today can have customized bathroom with facilities such as 24x7 hot and cold water supply, porcelain bathtub, spa, Jacuzzi, basin, frameless shower screens, bathroom vanity units, marble/granite flooring, ceramic tiling and choicest sanitary ware and tap ware.
There have been remarkable changes in bathrooms designing in recent years. Bathrooms of the early days looked grotesque due to a network of open plumbing, heavy stone masonry and poor lighting. Compared to that, modern bathrooms have concealed plumbing system, sleek tiling and subdued lighting.
If bathrooms in former times had one or two mirrors fixed on the walls, modern bathrooms have self-contained wardrobes and bathroom vanity units for grooming and dressing up immediately after having the bath. If earlier bathrooms had a single showerhead, today’s bathrooms have fully automatic shower suites with shower screens that discharge water according to programmed settings.
In short, modern bathrooms have evolved from cold and dingy places to highly luxurious rooms with all modern amenities. Indeed, Japanese people are so preoccupied with proper sanitation that they design bathrooms and toilets with automatic devices with multiple buttons that can confuse a newcomer to Japan.
