The number of visitors using mobile devices shot up to 56.9 million from 42.5 million with 34 percent growth rate year after year. The total number of Internet users in US was 227.7 million. Women accounted for 47 percent of user market with 43 percent year after year growth rate. Year after year, growth rate was high for women as compared to men. Still in other forms of Internet technology, more men were early-adopters of the mobile Web and holding a slightly larger market share than women. (Source: Nielsen reports July’09)
In recent times, we have seen that the mobile industry is on a fast track, with huge growth in mobile marketing and advertising. While smartphone ownership was once just a business tool, more consumers than ever are using smartphones in their everyday lives. According to wikipedia, a smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with personal computer. Smartphone usage is shifting from purely business use to both personal and business use. Owners are still more than two times likely to own a smartphone for business usage only. In the past year alone, the total number of smartphone subscribers increased by 72 percent quarter after quarter, growing from 15 million subscribers in Q2 2008 to 26 million in Q2 2009. According to the Nielsen report, although the penetration level of smartphone users is still fairly low which is nearly 17 percent in Q2 2009, they make up half of the mobile Web audience. Italy tops the list of smart phone adoption while US comes on 3rd spot.
According to the overall Nielsen report, year after year the mobile usage growth rate in 13-17 age group increased by 45 percent, in 18-24 age group it increased by 13 percent, in 25-34 age group people it increased by 40 percent, in 35-54 age group people it increased by 31 percent, in 55-64 age group people it increased by 37 percent, in 65+ age group people it increased by 65 percent for July’09. Senior people recorded more growth rate for web usage through mobiles than any other age group people.
Women were busy in celebrity news to online shopping during their mobile web usage in July’09 period. People.com and AT&T Search were most likely to be visited by women in July’09 period. Men were busy with news, sports, and online games. Most of them visited Gizmodo, a technology website in July’09 period.
More Americans than ever before are buying smartphones and using mobile data services like text messaging, games, email, mobile Internet, video, and ring tones according to the Nielsen company. Teen age people in their usage of mobile phones focuses heavily on text messaging, both sending and receiving. In Q2’09 period, the top-ranked mobile activity for teens was messaging, with 84 percent of teens sending a text message, 55 percent sending a picture message, 44 percent downloading the ring tones, 30 percent using emails, and 27 percent teens downloading the games according to the Nielsen research report.
From overall research report in July’09, the web usage through mobile devices has grown rapidly year after year.
